Refreshers

You would not believe how much trouble I am having buying a single packet of Refreshers. I need to buy a packet of Refreshers in order to prove that I am right in saying that Phil Nichols's herbal tea smells like Refreshers (until you brew it, when smells like someone's done a sick in your mug). Most people quite rightly accept what I say as fact, because I am always right, but for some reason Tony, Chris and Phil dispute my findings.
Now, I should clarify something here, when I refer to Refreshers I of course mean these bad boys, as opposed to these chewy bars, which if memory serves didn't appear on the confectionary scene until around 1988, maybe 1989. The Refreshers I'm referring to are a candy classic, even the packaging is a work of bold genius. So why is it that I've just walked around town for an hour, and come back empty handed? Even Woolworths didn't have them! Woolworths!
You can get them on the internet, but I'm going to London this weekend, so I'll have a look there first. My only worry is that by the time that I find a packet, Phil will have finished his box of tea, so we'll have nothing to compare the smell with. That would be a disaster.

Is ther a chance that Bassetts Refreshers are actually made in Sheffield? Bassetts have a factory here, I'm just not sure what they actually make.

The interweb seems to be pretty rubbish for finding information like that too...

Last time I saw refreshers in Sheffield was in Macro on the parkway. This might be a tad excessive though - you would have to buy a box of 50, just to prove a point. Having said this, I think proving yourself right is important. You should always put your money where your mouth is.

SPOTTED!!!

Get yourself down to Tesco on Infirmary Road (as I'm sure you know it's open virtually 24/7), confectionery aisle, about a quarter of the way up from the till end, bottom shelf.

They appear to be made these days by a company called Barratt, rather than Trebor which I'm sure used to make them. Maybe their scarcity is a cause, or indeed, effect of the brand being sold to another manufacturer? Who knows. I'll try to find out if you like.

Five rolls should be enough to either prove you right or give a decent enough sugar rush to numb the possibility of being wrong....

Enjoy.

Oooooh... I've just noticed that the shelf edge label identifies them as "Bassetts". I will now pour out a whiskey and attempt to find out the truth about "Bassetts"/"Barratt" situation...

Excellent work Phil. I'm pretty sure that Bassetts (Sheffield company famed for their Allsorts, which were invented when Mr Bassett knocked a load of sweets onto the floor in a shop on Fargate) is owned by Trebor (who make mints that are a minty bit stronger) who are owned by Cadbury (who own every type of confectionary in the world).

Damn! Phil's tea smells nothing like Refreshers. Oh cursed world, why must though implant such corruptions into my brain jelly and force me on such fool-hardy escapades?
